February 1: Bench donation

We have been kindly donated a bench by the family of Doug Baines a former resident of Beeston & Peckforton which is to be sited in the Village Hall garden for everyone to enjoy.

Doug Baines 1941-2020 lived at Beeston, with his parents Tom & Peggy (nee Nicholas) Baines until his marriage to Joyce. He attended Beeston school. After school he worked at Beeston Auction, a number of local farms, for Rolls Royce and as a caretaker at Tilstone Fearnall School. Joyce Baines (nee Stockton) 1939-1990 lived at Rowton Cottage, Bunbury with her parents Harry & Mary (nee Ravenscroft). She attended the former Bunbury girls school, College Lane. After school until their marriage, she worked at the shop in Bunbury. Doug and Joyce married at St Boniface Church in September 1966. Their first home was Moss Cottage, Beeston later moving to Laundry Cottage, Peckforton. Joyce loved walking up Hill Lane to the Haunted Bridge with their dog. Following Joyce’s death, Doug moved to Berkshire, to be near Carol and family, then Hampshire where he lived with his partner Winn for just over 20 years. Joyce’s ashes were buried at Bunbury, in the grave with her mum, Mary and their sons Gary and Paul. Doug requested that his ashes were also placed in that grave. They are survived by their daughter Carol and two grandchildren who, with the kind help of the the Peckforton & Beeston Village Hall committee and donations from friends & family  have arranged the placement of the memorial bench.
